Ze zijn nu te zien in de Hortus: kleine stukjes helderblauwe voorjaarslucht, verspreid door de tuin.

๐ชฑWorm party! In the Hortus, we LOVE worms. Here`s why:
๐ฟWe compost some of our garden waste ourselves. We do this on our compost heap, where we feed wood chips, prunings, weeds and grass clippings to the soil organisms living in the heap. It is a hot compost heap that can reach temperatures of up to 60 degrees. By alternating layers of soft green waste (green leaves, grass, weeds) with layers of โbrownโ green waste (twigs, wood chips), a lovely warm compost lasagne is created, in which the worms and micro-organisms actively transform the compost heap into fertile soil in as little as 10 weeks!

๐ชฑWormenfeest! In de Hortus zijn we dol op wormen. En dit is waarom:
๐ฟWe composteren we een deel van ons groenafval zelf. We doen dit op onze composthoop waar we houtsnippers, snoeisel, onkruid en grasmaaisel voeden aan onze bodemdieren die in de hoop leven. Het is een warme composthoop waarin wel temperaturen tot 60 graden worden gehaald. Door laagjes zacht groenafval (groene blaadjes, gras, onkruid) af te wisselen met laagjes โbruinโ groenafval (takjes, houtsnippers) ontstaat er een lekker warme `compostlasagne` waarin de wormen en micro-organismen de composthoop in wel 10 weken omtoveren tot vruchtbare aarde!

Did you know? The Netherlands may be famous for tulips, but their roots are much wilder!
๐ทMost wild tulip species grow in the mountainous regions of Central Asia. And while the Netherlands is famous for cultivating them, the natural home of the wild ancestor is a vast area stretching from the Mediterranean and Turkey through to the Tian Shan and Pamir-Alai mountain ranges in Central Asia.

๐ทDe meeste wilde tulpensoorten groeien in de bergachtige gebieden van Centraal-Aziรซ. En hoewel Nederland bekend staat om de teelt ervan (en Keukenhof, anyone?๐), ligt het natuurlijke verspreidingsgebied van de wilde voorouder in een groot gebied dat zich uitstrekt van de Middellandse Zee en Turkije tot aan het Tian Shan- en Pamir-Alai-gebergte in Centraal-Aziรซ.
๐ฅฐThe ๐ง๐ฎ๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ (๐๐ช๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ด ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ด๐ข) is a pretty shrub native to the mountain regions of the Himalayas and southwest China. In spring it produces elegant clusters of small, pendulous, bell-shaped flowers. โ

๐ฅฐDe ๐ง๐ฎ๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ (๐๐ช๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ด ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ด๐ข) is een mooi struikje afkomstig uit de berggebieden van de Himalaya en Zuidwest-China. In het voorjaar verschijnen sierlijke trosjes hangende, klokvormige bloemen.
