๐๐ช๐ค๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ช๐ด๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ณ๐ข ๐ต๐ฉ๐บ๐ณ๐ด๐ช๐ง๐ญ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ข or blue ginger is a tropical plant from Brazil thatโs part of the dayflower family, not the ginger one. It`s flowering in our tropical greenhouse now, with spires of purple-blue blooms.โ

๐๐ช๐ค๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ช๐ด๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ณ๐ข ๐ต๐ฉ๐บ๐ณ๐ด๐ช๐ง๐ญ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ข of blauwe gember is een tropische plant uit Braziliรซ die behoort tot de dagbloemenfamilie, niet tot de gemberfamilie. Hij bloeit nu in onze tropische kas met torentjes van prachtige paarsblauwe bloemen.
๐ผTijdens haar snuffelstage in de Hortus ontdekte een scholiere dat het prachtige Sint Helena-ebbenhout bloeit in onze Palmenkas!โ

๐๏ธDeze bloemen zijn van het ๐ฆ๐ถ๐ป๐ ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐ฎ-๐ฒ๐ฏ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ป๐ต๐ผ๐๐ (๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ค๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ด๐ช๐ด ๐ฆ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ด). Deze kleine boom komt - zoals de naam doet vermoeden - in het wild enkel op het eiland Sint Helena voor, waar er nog maar twee te vinden zijn. Omdat de dichtheid van het hout hoger is dan die van water, drijft het hout niet, maar zinkt het direct wanneer je het in water legt!๐ชต๐โ

๐๏ธThese flowers belong to our Saint Helena ebony (๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ค๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ด๐ช๐ด ๐ฆ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ด). This small tree is endemic to the island of Saint Helena, where there are only two left in the wild. Remarkably, the wood`s density is greater than water and therefore a piece of St Helena ebony will not float - it sinks immediately when placed in water!๐ชต๐
